Fjällräven Polar 2017 – day 5: Sleeping under the Northern Lights

Yesterday evening we honestly thought it would be a really gentle night, but nothing is as it seems. When we woke up we found out that it had been -15ᵒC while we were asleep. No wonder our tent sticks were completely frozen.. Breaking down camp went a lot easier today. We fed the dogs, had breakfast, cleaned up after ourselves and packed our sleds within no time! Multitasking on a sled And before we knew it we were on our way again! Right before we left I got an extra passenger. Last night’s cameraman wanted to ride with me for a bit to talk about my thoughts and feelings on the…

Fjällräven Polar 2017 – day 4: The Arctic wilderness at its best

The first night in the Arctic wilderness was the worst night of the week. Because of my really painful back I was unable to get some proper sleep and woke up feeling exhausted. Besides that I’ve made the rookie mistake of wearing too much clothes in my sleeping bag which made me feel freezing cold all night long. To top it of I was woken up by crying huskies about 10 times. But there was no time to snooze, because I heard something ticking on the tent. Was it rain? And what is that dark spot on top of our tent? Whiteout for breakfast We zipped open our tent and…

Fjällräven Polar 2017 – day 3: Physically and mentally overwhelmed

When I was standing on a dog sled for the very first time in northern Norway, I was completely overwhelmed by the experience and I said to myself: “This is happiness. This is it. I want to do this for the rest of my life”. And then this happened, I was about to start the journey of a lifetime. A journey of pure happiness. On day three we would finally get on the sled and go into the wild. Was I ready? Hell no. Did I think I could do it? Nope. But I did. Fjällräven Polar 2017 was going to start today. And I was there. Packing like a pro…

Fjällräven Polar 2017 – day 2: Avalanche danger and tears of panic

It was an early morning, the second day of Fjällräven Polar 2017. Still a bit sleeping I stumbled past the breakfast buffet and onwards to the bus with my big backpack stuffed with gear on my back. The trip from Sigtuna to Tromsø was about to start. Within a couple of hours I would catch a glimpse of the city that enchanted me a year and a half ago. Avalanche danger in Signaldalen From Stockholm we flew to Oslo, where we transfered on a flight to Tromsø. Unfortunately the second day was not as smooth as this day (I’m super terrified of flying), so I decided to take my medication. Once we arrived in…

Fjällräven Polar 2017 – day 1: Silence is silver, speech is golden

In October 2016 I learned about the Fjällräven Polar Contest. A contest, organized by the well known outdoor brand, that allowed ordinary people from all over the world to go on an adventure of a lifetime. A 300 kilometer dog sled adventure through the Arctic wilderness with over 200 Alaskan huskies and 25 fellow adventurers from all over the world. When I found out about this contest, I knew one thing for sure: I have to win this. This is for me. And two months later, after 4 weeks of competing my ass off, ignoring people that told me to quit and against all odds, I won. I won Fjällräven Polar 2017. I…

Fjällräven Polar 2017 – An adventure begins!

Only two more sleeps till I leave Amsterdam and will travel towards Stockholm to start the adventure of a lifetime. In Stockholm I will meet 27 fellow adventurers from all over the world with whom I will be spending the next 7 days. And with spending I mean surviving in the wilderness, camping in the snow and hopefully enjoy some Northern Lights! Because we are participating in Fjällräven Polar 2017. Fjällräven Polar 2017 Last december I earned a spot in this expedition by getting 12326 votes. A wanted spot, so to speak. Because there were a lot of people joining the competition. Together with Freek van Eijk I will be representing…
