The 12 most photogenic places of fjord Norway

In the southwest of Norway, also known as fjord Norway, lay endless possibilities for hiking through national parks and roadtripping national tourist routes. But besides that I have another hobby. The last couple of years I have worked really hard to find the most beautiful spots in fjord Norway to capture my journeys in a special way. And with success. These are the 12 most photogenic places of fjord Norway! 1. Trollkirka, Molde Hidden in the western part of Møre og Romsdal, just above Molde, lies Trollkirka. The composition of underground pathways and colorful limestone caves is the reward you get for an hour and a half of hiking through…

Litlefjellet, the hidden gem of Romsdal

Somewhere in Vengedalen lies a very well hidden gem. It’s dreamy, beautiful and fairylike and it’s called Litlefjellet (literally ‘small mountain’). Locals also call it ‘Romsdalseggen light’. Litlefjellet is my favorite spot in the entire area and getting their is fairly easy as well! Even though I’d rather keep this special place for myself, I can’t possibly keep this from you. And because putting into words how special this place is, is pretty hard, I’ll just show you why Litlefjellet stole my heart.  How to get to Litlefjellet? Hiking to Litlefjellet could be done by a four year old! However, getting to the starting point doesn’t just ‘happen’. You have to go look…

Drama, beauty and danger at The Atlantic Road

The Atlantic Road, to Norwegians better known as Atlanterhavsveien, belongs to the 18 national tourist routes of Norway. And you can’t deny that, because this road is amazing! This public piece of asphalt, which actually looks more like a rollercoaster than a road, connects the islands Averøy, Vevang and Eide to the mainland of Kristiansund and Molde. The road is barely 8 kilometers long, but is renowned worldwide for her impressive appearance. The Atlantic Road hops over the ocean via 8 very special bridges from island to island. It undulates, folds, curls, twists, climbs and descends in the most spectacular ways from Molde to Kristiansund. The Norwegians consider this road as cultural heritage and in…

One of the most beautiful roads in the world: Trollstigen

Trollstigen is the final point of one of the 18 National Tourist Routes (Nasjonale Turistveger) of Norway: Geiranger – Trollstigen. This steep mountain pass full of hair pins is world famous and gets hundreds of thousands of visits per year by road trip lovers from all over the world. Trollstigen literally means ‘ladder for a troll’ or ‘Troll’s ladder’. Back in the days Trollstigen was a dangerous mountain pass that shephards took to bring their sheep to the mountain top. On July 31st 1936 it became an asphalted road and today it’s one of the most famous roads in the world. It’s been named in endless ‘top 10 roadtrip’ lists,…

The Kjenndalsbreen is Norway in miniature

You can visit many different glacier arms of the Jostedalsbreen in the area of Loen. Last summer we combined our trip to Lovatnet with a visit to the Kjenndalsbreen! The least popular of four well-known glacier arms (Nigardsbreen, Brikdalsbreen, Bødalsbreen and Kjenndalsbreen) in this area, but to us this was one of the main reasons to pay the glacier a visit. You can find the Kjenndalsbreen south of the Lovatnet in Loen, nearby Stryn in Sogn og Fjordane. You can make the hike to the glacier arm as easy or hard as you’d like. For example you can start the hike down in the valley and walk up to the foot of the glacier within 45 minutes or you can…

The tragic history of the beautiful Lovatnet

The Lovatnet is a beautiful lake with a long, tragic history. A little past Loen, in the area of Stryn in Sogn og Fjordane, you can still tell from the surroundings what distasters took place in this gorgeous valley more than a century ago. The pearly green lake contains mostly melt water that finds it’s way down from the Jostedalsbreen and the Tindefjellbreen to the Lodalen valley. From the Lovatnet on the water flows through the Loelva river all the way to the Nordfjorden. Because of the sky high mountain tops surrounding the lake, the bright water in the fjord and lake and greener than green grass along the waters, the Lovatnet is almost too pretty to be true. Tourists are very fond of…

Avalanche danger on our way to the Juklavatnet

Nearby Folgefonna national park, in municipality Kvinnherad, you can find breathtaking mountain lake Juklavatnet all the way up the Mauranger mountain. You can take a hike up there, starting at the Jukla kraftstasjon. It will take you about 3 hours to walk a roundtrip. The perfect warming-up for when you’re planning to hike the nearby Trolltunga the next day! The trail is unmarked, but quite easy to follow. Make sure you wear waterproof boots though, because you have to cross small streams and it can be very hard to keep your feet dry when there’s a lot of meltwater. Once you get to the Juklavatnet you can walk further up to…

Norway is about to open a scenic viewing point over Gaularfjellet

One of the better kept secrets of fjord Norway is the Gaularfjellet. Gaularfjellet is a mountain lying in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, which is crossed by a road from Dragsvik to Moskog. This road belongs to the 18 official national tourist routes of Norway and treats its visitors to something that can be called quite an impressive roadtrip. The journey starts at the longest fjord in the world (Sognefjord) and takes you over tiny mountain paths, to see lively rapids and waterfalls, all the way along the river Gaula to the highest point of the route: the Gaularfjellet. Last summer we traveled over this amazing national tourist route as well. With our favorite part: the highest point…

Hiking Langfoss got me addicted for life

Along the E134 highway, between Markus and Skare, rumbles one of the five highest waterfalls of Norway: the Langfoss. Literally: long (lang) waterfall (foss). Because of her wondrous surroundings and accessibility, the Langfoss has earned a spot on the CNN list of the 10 most beautiful waterfalls in the world. The Langfoss is not only super impressive to watch herself, but the waterfall rages 600 meters down from the river Tjørna right into the bright green Åkrafjord terecht. On the opposite of the fjord is another little waterfall that ends into the fjord. All of this combined makes a dreamy scene that causes touringcars full of tourists to use the emergency brake…
